The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, issued the 2027 holiday list on 16 July 2026 under OM F.No.12/2/2023-JCA. Compulsory gazetted holidays: 17 days. Employees may also take any two of the 32 restricted holidays.
Which gazetted holidays fall in 2027?
The dates below are from the DoPT Office Memorandum for Central Government offices in Delhi and New Delhi. Six of the 17 holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday in 2027, so the working day loss is lower than in 2026.

How the list works for offices outside Delhi
Central Government offices outside Delhi and New Delhi observe 14 compulsory holidays: Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday, Buddha Purnima, Christmas Day, Dussehra (Vijay Dashami), Diwali (Deepavali), Good Friday, Guru Nanak's Birthday, Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Mahavir Jayanti, Muharram and Milad-un-Nabi.
They then add three more holidays from a list of 12 optional festivals: an additional day for Dussehra, Holi, Janmashtami, Ram Navami, Maha Shivratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, Makar Sankranti, Rath Yatra, Onam, Pongal, Sri Panchami or Basant Panchami, and the regional New Year days (Vishu, Vaisakhi, Bhag Bihu, Chaitra Sukladi, Cheti Chand, Gudi Padava, Ugadi, Navroz and the Bengali, Tamil, Assamese and Kannada New Years). The choice is made by the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee in the state capital.
Which restricted holidays are listed for 2027?

What should HR keep in mind when planning 2027?

- Six gazetted holidays land on weekends in 2027. Decide now whether your policy gives a substitute day off, and say so in the circular, because employees will ask.
- Diwali on Friday 29 October makes a natural long weekend. Expect leave requests for Thursday 28 October (Naraka Chaturdasi) and plan cover for payroll cut-off if your cycle closes near month end.
- If you operate across several states, align site-wise holidays with the state notification while keeping the national holidays common.
- Mark the four moon-dependent holidays as "subject to official confirmation" in your circular.
