Part of what follows is set by West Bengal and is not the same in the next state. The rest runs on central law and does not move at all.

What has to appear on a payslip in India?

A payslip should show the employee name and identifier, the wage period, the days paid and days lost, every earning component listed separately, every deduction listed separately, the gross, and the net paid. Where provident fund and employee state insurance apply, those deductions are named lines with the employer share shown or stated. The Code on Wages requires employers to issue wage slips to employees.

For a company in West Bengal (state hub page), the practical test is whether an employee can reconstruct their own net pay from the slip without asking anyone. If they cannot, the slip is incomplete.

What should an increment letter say?

The effective date, the revised annual figure, the revised component breakup, and whether any arrears are payable for months already run. If the designation is changing too, say so explicitly rather than letting a new title appear in the salary letter without comment.

The component breakup is the part small companies skip. A revision that raises the allowance and leaves basic pay untouched changes take home more than it changes provident fund, and employees notice.

When does gratuity become payable?

After five years of continuous service with the same employer, calculated as last drawn wages multiplied by 15, multiplied by completed years, divided by 26. A final part year above six months counts as a full year. The amount is capped at 20 lakh rupees.

Three situations skip the five year rule. Death and permanent disablement pay out at any tenure. A fixed term employee engaged directly becomes eligible after one year, on a proportionate basis. Contract labour supplied through a contractor is the contractor liability rather than yours.

Is a notice period enforceable in India?

The clause itself is binding, because a signed appointment letter is a contract under the Indian Contract Act, 1872. What no Indian court will do is order a person back to work. Enforcement runs through money, usually recovery of pay for the unserved days through the full and final settlement.

That is why the deduction authority in the appointment letter matters. Without it, recovering notice pay from the settlement is harder than it needs to be.
