The Chennai specifics, in short

Chennai sits in Chennai district. Part of what follows is decided locally and is not the same in the next district, and the rest runs on central law and does not move at all.

Please check this before you act on it. Offices move, jurisdictions get redrawn and rates are revised, often quietly. Ring the department to confirm the address, and get your CA or labour adviser to sign off the compliance position. None of this is legal or tax advice. Offrd has no connection to the offices named and does not represent them. Checked 12 September 2026. Spot something out of date? Tell us at service@offrd.co.

Which Chennai industries are you hiring for?

Chennai's own MSME-DI profile draws a clean line worth knowing before you assume anything about the city's auto industry, the component makers are genuinely here, the assembly plants people usually mean are actually next door in Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts.

IT and ITESdistrict wide1,325 units

Rs 1,073 crore in exports and 50,000 workers, the district's largest cluster by export value, per its MSME-DI profile.

Auto componentsGuindy area4,200 units

Rs 330 crore in exports and 125,000 workers. This is component manufacturing inside Chennai district itself, distinct from the Ford, Hyundai and Royal Enfield assembly plants and the SIPCOT Sriperumbudur and Oragadam estates, which sit in neighbouring Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts, not Chennai.

Ready-made garmentsdistrict wide400 units

Rs 360 crore in exports and 100,000 workers.

Thiru.Vi.Ka Industrial EstateGuindy700 units in production

404 acres and 22,000 in employment, the largest named industrial estate in the district's own profile.

Commercial Taxes Department, Tamil Nadu

Chennai Port Trust

One of India's major ports, handling a significant share of the city's cargo.

Confirm this before you rely on it. Figures come from the district's MSME-DI profile dated 2015-16. Chennai is widely known as an auto manufacturing hub, but the flagship OEM plants, Ford, Hyundai and Royal Enfield's main works, along with the SIPCOT Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt, sit administratively in Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts, not Chennai district itself, so we have not attributed them here. Office addresses and contact details can change on a notification you will not see. Verify the office and its current jurisdiction before you act on it, and take advice from your chartered accountant or labour law adviser. None of this is legal or tax advice. Offrd has no connection to the offices named and does not represent them. Checked 12 September 2026. Spot something out of date? Tell us at service@offrd.co.

How long should it take to send an offer letter?

Most small employers in Chennai lose candidates in the gap between a verbal yes and a written offer. The work itself is not hard. Someone opens last month letter, changes the name and the salary, forgets to change the joining date, and sends a document with another employee details buried in the footer. That is the common failure, and it is a template problem, not a people problem.

Generating the letter from stored company details removes the copy and paste step. The entity name, the signatory, the registered address, the standard clauses and the salary structure sit in one place. What changes per candidate is the name, the role and the numbers.

How is an appointment letter different from an offer letter?

The offer letter invites someone to join. The appointment letter is the employment contract that takes over once they do. In practice many companies in Chennai issue only one document and treat it as both, which works until a dispute, at which point the missing terms are the ones being argued about.

An appointment letter carries the terms the offer letter usually skips: confidentiality, intellectual property, the leave entitlement, the disciplinary process, transfer and deputation, and the grounds on which employment can end. It is issued on or shortly after the joining date and signed by both sides.

Frequently asked questions

What district does Chennai fall under?

Chennai is in Chennai. The district matters because the labour office, and in a few states the professional tax authority, are district level appointments.

Who collects professional tax from a Chennai employer?

Greater Chennai Corporation, Revenue Department

Can an offer be withdrawn after the candidate accepts?

It can, but an accepted offer is a contract, so withdrawal exposes the employer to a claim for the loss the candidate suffered by resigning elsewhere. Where an offer is conditional on references or a background check, say so in the letter itself.

What can a Chennai company run on Offrd?

The full employee paperwork cycle, joining to exit, plus attendance and payroll.

Which statutory deductions apply to a Chennai payroll?

These are the four that show up on almost every Chennai payslip. Offrd computes all of them without separate configuration.

Tamil Nadu professional tax

Applied to the payslip as per the Tamil Nadu slabs and capped at ₹2,500 per employee per year, the ceiling set by Indian law. Nothing to set up by hand.

EPF

12% employee and 12% employer contributions, calculated on the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000. UAN and contribution lines appear on the payslip.

ESI

0.75% employee and 3.25% employer on gross wages, for employees earning up to ₹21,000 a month. Common in Ambattur and Sriperumbudur units with wage roll staff.

Gratuity

Accrued from Basic using the (wages × 15 × years) / 26 formula, so full and final settlements at exit match what the law expects.

HR software for OMR, Guindy, Ambattur and Sriperumbudur teams

Chennai's work map is spread out. Software and services companies sit along OMR and in Guindy and Taramani. Manufacturing runs through Ambattur, and the SIPCOT estates at Siruseri, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam. Many companies have people in more than one of these, plus field staff in between. That is the situation Offrd is built for: one account, one employee list, attendance from any location, and the same payslip logic for an engineer on OMR and an operator in Ambattur.

If you run a factory or MSME unit inside a SIPCOT estate, there is a separate page for that. If you want the state wide picture beyond Chennai, start with the Tamil Nadu page.

How much does HR software cost for a small company in Chennai?

Two ways to pay. Pay per use at ₹99 per document, which suits companies that hire a few people a quarter and mainly need letters and payslips. Or a subscription at ₹50 per active employee per month, which suits teams running monthly payroll and attendance on the platform. Every new account starts with 50 free credits, there is no setup fee, and the Atndnz attendance app is included at no extra cost for paying users. A 20 person company issuing five documents a month spends under ₹500 on pay per use. Compare that with a consultant charging ₹500 to ₹2,000 for a single letter.

Common questions from Chennai businesses

Does Offrd calculate Tamil Nadu professional tax?

Yes. Professional tax for Tamil Nadu is applied inside payroll and shown as a deduction on each payslip. The annual amount is capped at ₹2,500 per employee under Indian law, and you do not have to configure the slabs yourself.

How much does HR software cost for a small company in Chennai?

On Offrd you either pay ₹99 per document with no monthly commitment, or ₹50 per active employee per month on subscription. Every new account starts with 50 free credits, so you can issue your first letters without paying anything. There is no setup fee.

Is there a Tamil version of this page?

Yes. The same information is available in Tamil at offrd.co/landing/local/chennai-startup-hr-tn.html. The product interface itself is in English.

Can attendance cover both office staff and field or factory teams?

Yes. The bundled Atndnz app supports QR check in, GPS and geofencing, so a sales team on the road, a workshop in Ambattur and a desk team in Guindy can all mark attendance into the same account.

How long does setup take?

Under two minutes to create the account. Import employees by CSV, set the salary structure, and your first offer letter or payslip can go out the same day. There is no implementation project and no training calls are needed.
