Delhi High Court says piece rate workers can still count as employees
The Delhi High Court has held that workers paid by the piece can still count as employees under labour law, where the employer controls and supervises how the work is done. In a 14 May order, the court told a garment maker to pay 1.25 lakh rupees to a tailor whose service ended in 1999. How a person is paid does not settle their status, the court said. SME read, small workshops that rely on piece rate hands may carry PF and gratuity duties they assumed they had sidestepped.
